Barbara Bonson & her guide dog Nara visited the Rotary Club of Hawkesbury and provides some insight into the aids available to the visually impaired.
The old adage of life begins at 40 was certainly true for Barbara. For the first time in her life, Barbara was able to be independent with the use of a white cane stick. After that she was introduced to a guide dog. Her husband likened the experience to giving someone a red sports car for their birthday...she was off and away!
The Guide Dog Association is a wonderful local charity, below is an insert from their website.
"You are welcome to contact us to talk about our range of services. We are here to advise and assist people to learn safe and manageable ways of getting about.
Your difficulty may be with stairs, getting to work, bright sunshine, or whatever. Each person's needs will be different. Each program will be tailored to the person's needs. Guide Dogs NSW/ACT services are quite broad. Most people do not need a Guide Dog. However, they do gain benefit from other types of training, for example, safe road crossings.
Whatever your age or situation we can help. While your vision is important in planning a program, just as important is what you are seeking to achieve or overcome.
Services are free to residents of New South Wales and the ACT and are provided on a domiciliary basis i.e. our instructors visit you at home, school, work or wherever required.
If you would like to hear more about our services please phone your regional office. We are happy to receive referrals from friends or family members, on behalf of the person, providing the referral is made with their consent. "
A big thank you to Barbara & Nara. |

Real Estate Agents Rachael Goldsworthy and Jim Aitken joined forces through Rotary to support Interplast Australia and New Zealand, a charity that supports doctors and nurses from neighbouring Asia-Pacific countries to continue their training in plastic & reconstructive surgery in Australia. Interplast supports approximately 30 programs in some 16 countries each year as well as sponsoring medicos to continue their training.
You can support the many motivated, professional and compassionate volunteers from Australia and New Zealand to improve access to health services in our neighbouring countries. All donations are greatly appreciated, judiciously used and tax deductible. |

Federal Member for Greenway, Louise Markus MP attended the local Rotary Club of Hawkesbury to update members on local issues.
Louise spoke of Climate Change initiatives which would benefit Greenway; "this $627 million package of practical new climate change measures has benefits for communities, for individual households and for the environment as a whole". The initiatives have increased the Australian Government's total commitment to climate change to around $3.4 billion. Louise also spoke of funding to Kuyper Christian School's Chaplaincy, a Family Relationship Centre for Greenway, Windsor Park Public School receipt of Schools Programme Funding, extra regional AusLink Road Funds, and the opening of South Windsor Family Centre.
There is much more on the horizon for Louise and Hawkesbury Rotarians were grateful for her time with such a busy schedule. |
